AAC Visits the Organization of American States and the Art Museum of the Americas

A Look Back at a Meaningful Visit in Washington, D.C.

Last month, members of the American Arts Conservancy had the privilege of touring the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters and the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) in Washington, D.C. The visit brought together members of our Board of Directors, Advisory Council, and Executive Leadership for a day of exploration, dialogue, and shared purpose.

Among those in attendance were members of AAC’s Board, the Executive Director, and Advisory Council members — including esteemed artist Brendan Murphy — who joined us in discovering the rich history and cultural significance of these historic institutions.

The Art Museum of the Americas, founded in 1976, stands as one of the oldest museums of modern and contemporary Latin American and Caribbean art in the United States. Housed within the OAS headquarters, its collection and programming embody the values of cultural exchange, artistic dialogue, and hemispheric unity — all of which align deeply with AAC’s mission to promote diplomacy through art.

Our group was warmly received and guided through the building’s historic halls, learning about the origins of the OAS and the architectural legacy of the AMA. The experience underscored the shared goals between our organizations: the belief that art has the power to transcend borders and strengthen understanding among nations.

We look forward to exploring future opportunities for collaboration and to continuing the important work of connecting art, diplomacy, and education across the Americas.

As we reflect on this meaningful visit, we remain inspired by the spirit of cultural partnership that defines both the OAS and the Art Museum of the Americas — and by the enduring role of art in shaping our shared global narrative.

The exchange of ideas through art strengthens the ties between nations — reminding us that creativity is the truest form of diplomacy.
