Behind the Scenes: AAC Visits the Art In Embassies Repository

The American Arts Conservancy (AAC) recently had the privilege of stepping behind the curtain of the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies (AIE) repository—a space where history, culture, and creativity converge.

Walking through the collection, we encountered a remarkable range of celebrated works by American artists, spanning generations and stylistic movements. Each piece carried with it a story not only of artistic mastery but also of cultural diplomacy, bridging audiences across the globe through the language of art.

During our visit, we met with the curators of AIE, who shared their expertise and guided us through the collection. We explored the different artistic periods represented within the repository, gaining a deeper understanding of how American art reflects the evolving identity and aspirations of our nation.

This visit also offered us the opportunity to discuss initial restoration goals, a critical part of preserving and protecting these works for future generations. Together, we began to outline the first steps in supporting conservation efforts, ensuring that the works of American artists continue to shine in embassies and cultural institutions around the world.

Our time at the repository was a reminder of the immense responsibility—and privilege—that comes with our mission. At AAC, we are honored to play a role in strengthening the global presence of American art, working in close partnership with AIE to celebrate, preserve, and share our nation’s creative legacy.

Stay tuned as we continue to share more from our journey, including future restoration updates and stories from the incredible artists whose works define the fabric of American art.
